Amarok 1.4.10 on OpenSolaris

I admit. I like Amarok 1.4. And I don't like Amarok 2 yet. And I hate GNOME and its Rhythmbox. And - finally - I appreciate Open Solaris.

screenshot-amarok.pngSo this weekend I had that idea "What if I had an Amarok 1.4 on my Solaris box..."... At the beginning it was a nice idea but at the end I learned how deep dependencies between libraries are. At short - Amarok 1.4 needs KDE 3.5. KDE (at least the kdelibs) need many other libraries and packages. So at the end, I installed over 300 Megabytes to have my favorite music player. Really. As a side effect, I have many KDE 3.5.10 applications too, as konsole (I prefer it over gnome's terminal), kate and Konqueror.
I packaged all needed libraries and they can be downloaded. Be sure to read the README, it contains the order in which the packages have to be installed.

To make things faster, just download all packages in one file:

ALL_IN_ONE.tar

Beware, it is a "it's good enough for me"-solution.
If you like to do crazy things, you may add a KDE session in your gnome desktop manager. gdm sessions are described by session files in

/usr/share/xsessions

Take the file "gnome.desktop" as a template and keep in mind that "startkde" is the session start command for KDE.

Many things won't work however:

  • There is no timezone present, kicker will use UTC.
  • kcontrol does not work as there is no system:/ tree
  • and many other side effects
I just wanted amarok, after all... :) And I got a working libxine/xine-ui as a plus (as Amarok depends on it).

As kde uses gnome's definitions, just don't be astonished when Konqueror opens the GNOME editor and not kate.

In case you want to try it: Enjoy!

Woah, I was always too lazy to do this - using it on -dev (110) now - THANK YOU =)

This is wonderful, I too was too lazy (it's a virtue, not a sin).
